Things You Should Know!

  • Food Bank - Gardners are expected to give a minimum of 20 % of grown produce to the local food bank. Since the opening of Payson Community Garden, our gardeners have donated a portion of their produce to our local food bank. Over the past three years, we have donated an average of 8,768 pounds and are excited to keep serving our community!

  • Organic Garden – We are organic gardeners only! We view our gardens as part of a whole system that includes the water supply, people, wildlife, and even insects. We do not use chemically based synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. As organic gardeners, we work with natural systems and continually build up our soil to provide healthy plant growth conditions.

  • Gardening Classes – The classes cover everything you need to know for a successful garden every year. All classes are free and open to the public, so please invite friends to attend these excellent “state of garden” classes for helpful gardening information given by local experts. Click here for the class calendar. The classes will be at the Church of the Nazarene or the garden. (Check your email for changes or look for the class sign)

  • Emails: Emails are the quickest and most efficient way to receive alerts about any changes in the garden, updated guidelines, and important announcements posted on the News bulletin board. Read these to stay up-to-date with any alerts regarding diseases or other issues that may affect your garden and require immediate attention.

  • Text alerts - By signing the garden agreement, you have agreed to receive text messages regarding weather closures and emergency messages. If you prefer NOT to receive text messages, please use the "contact us form" to let us know and we will remove you from the list.

  • Garden Care – Plan to visit your garden at least two or three times a week throughout the season. Neglected gardens are not productive and produce weeds that affect others around them. Because garden beds are close to others, please strive to be a good garden neighbor and not cause problems for others.

  • Hours of Operation – Scheduled open garden hours will be posted for the month but may vary depending on the weather. We open March 6 and will be open every Saturday from 10 am - 3 pm in March. Weekday hours begin in April and continue through October. Please check the garden hours for times, as hours change during the garden season. We are closed on Sundays

  • The garden closes for the season on December 9. All gardeners must have gardens and aisles cleaned up and all items removed from the garden for the winter except for boxes, heavily ridged metal trellises, and large cages, which must be secured firmly. All temporary trellises and covers, tomato “teepee” style cages, posts, containers, buckets, and miscellaneous items should leave the garden.

  • Weather - The garden may be closed due to weather, usually during the monsoon season with heavy rain and lightning. For your safety, you will be asked to leave the garden if lightning threatens. If staff asks you to leave, please do so quickly. You may sign up for a “text” alert when the garden is closed due to weather or other emergencies.

  • Parking – Please, no parking in front of any gates to keep the driveway cleared for heavy equipment. You may only drive into the garden if you have a temporary physical disability and cannot carry your items or have heavy items to unload. You must move your car back to the parking lot immediately after unloading. Please use extreme caution for the safety of all gardeners.
